Weight Loss Quiz: Does Muscle Really Weigh More Than Fat?

See on Scoop.it - Health and Wellness Center - Elevate Christian Network

It’s one of those common fitness misconceptions you hear all the time when it comes to weight loss and working out: “Muscle weighs more than fat.” Bad news. It’s not true. A pound is a pound — both a pound of muscle and a pound of fat weigh the same.
Cee Harmon’s insight:
According to science, muscle is denser and more fibrous in nature, as it serves to help support and move your entire body. Since dense muscle tissue takes up less space than fat, you may appear slimmer than another person with the same weight and a similar height and frame because of the difference in your body composition.

Multiple Sclerosis: New treatment can halt progression of the disease, says study

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a condition causes the immune system to attack the lining of nerves in the brain and spinal cord. Most patients are diagnosed in their 20s and 30s.
One existing treatment is for the immune system to be suppressed with chemotherapy and then stem cells are introduced to the patient’s bloodstream - this procedure is known as an autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT).
In the new study, Canadian researchers went further - not just suppressing the immune system, but destroying it altogether. It is then rebuilt with stem cells harvested from the patient’s own blood which are at such an early stage, they have not developed the flaws that trigger MS.
The authors said that among the survivors, over a period of up to 13 years, there were no relapses and no new detectable disease activity.

Cee Harmon’s insight:
A scientific study conducted in Canada suggests that aggressive chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant can halt the progression of multiple sclerosis (MS.

Aemilia Madden: “As a 20-something living in a big city, squeezing in a workout is tough. Some days it feels like I have to choose between hitting the gym or heading to happy hour — but I want both!”

To her, waking up earlier than needed was like a unique form of torture. It’s like there was an epic battle between her motivated self and her lazy self — a sort of tug-of-war between the comfort of her large, plush bed and the energizing hum of the gym.

How to Properly Bathe Children With Eczema - BBC News

If your child has eczema it is fine to give them a dunk in the bath every day, as long as you apply lots of moisturizer to their skin afterwards, US experts say.
Dr Carsten Flohr, from the British Association of Dermatologists and an expert at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital and the Evelina London Children’s Hospital, has been studying the effects of frequent bathing on skin barrier function.
He said daily bathing or washing every other day was fine, but soap, bubble baths and shower gels could irritate the skin and make eczema worse in some people.

Cee Harmon’s insight:
According to researchers, after you’ve gently pat dried the child’s skin, you should smear plenty of moisturizing lotion on them to seal in the moisture.
